About the University
Founded in June 2022, HKUST (GZ) is located in Nansha, Guangzhou, the geometric center of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. It is perfectly placed for geographical convenience and forms part of an axis for technological progress. They call it the new Silicon Valley of the East.
It is the world’s first university to experiment with an innovative academic structure. With Hubs and Thrusts instead of Schools and Departments, it is geared to promoting interdisciplinary learning in a restless search for innovative solutions to humanity’s major challenges.
HKUST(GZ) boasts cutting-edge research facilities tailored to meet the needs of our investigating scientists in various disciplines. HKUST(GZ) is a spin-off from the world-class HKUST. But both benefit from the synergy of unified and complementary campuses with shared resources--another radical departure from the conventional practice in higher education. The HKUST(GZ) community will consist of 800 faculty members, 4000 undergraduates and 6000 postgraduates.
Our academic staff are drawn from the world’s finest institutions. Here English is the medium of instruction and undergraduate programs are carefully articulated with postgraduate studies.
About Society Hub
The HKUST(GZ) Society Hub (SOCH) aims to be a global leader in addressing societal challenges in the age of intelligence. We are committed to nurture socially-conscious talents with cutting-edge analytical skills and an open and growing mindset, ready to resolve socio-economic issues and contribute to the knowledge economy in a networked society and rapidly changing world. The Hub primarily comprises four Thrusts: Carbon Neutrality and Climate Change (CNCC), Financial Technology (FTEC), Innovation, Policy and Entrepreneurship (IPE), and Urban Governance and Design (UGOD).
About Courses
The course provides students with exposure to and practice in using English within the specific fields of Carbon Neutrality and Climate Change, Financial Technology, Innovation, Policy and Entrepreneurship, Urban Governance and Design. The course aims to encourage students to develop their abilities as thoughtful communication strategists, to communicate effectively, appropriately and confidently in relevant academic and professional contexts, and to use language to express critically the wider social implications of their fields on topics relevant to all SOCH students.
This one year course makes use of the Final Year Thesis or Final Year Capstone Project with their associated spoken and written components to maximize the language and literacy gains from carrying out this significant piece of work. The course supports students in producing the communicative components of the project and, though iterations of those components, further develops and refines their ability to present and write at a high level in an academic context.
