Position in Business and Management

The Faculty of Liberal Arts, Sophia University, invites applications for a full-time faculty position in Business and Management at the level of Assistant or Associate Professor. The Associate Professor rank is a tenured appointment, while the Assistant Professor rank is a five-year tenure-track position.

The candidate is expected to have a Ph.D. in Management in hand by September 1, 2025, a strong record of scholarly publications, and teaching experience. The new hire would complement the existing Business and Management team by adding expertise in fields, such as human resource management, organizational behavior, organizational culture, leadership, multinational corporation management, digital business, knowledge management, change management, entrepreneurship, innovation management, or other areas not currently covered by the business and management faculties. Practitioner experience will also be considered.

The successful applicant will teach in the undergraduate International Business and Development (IBE) Area and the Graduate Program in Global Studies (GPGS). We strongly prefer a candidate who can begin on April 1, 2026; however, under exceptional circumstances, a start date of September 21, 2026, may be considered. Our faculty is committed to promoting gender balance, and we have a strong preference for hiring a female candidate (Positive Action).

The language of instruction is English, but competence in the Japanese language is desirable. The successful applicant is expected to teach Principles of Management, and intermediate and advanced courses in the areas of their specialization. The teaching load is four courses in the first year (two/two), and five courses in the next year (two/three), on a two-year rotation. This teaching load includes one course annually in the GPGS. A course meets twice a week for one hundred minutes each class. Salary and benefits are based on the Sophia School Corporation’s rules and regulations.

The successful applicant is expected to maintain an active research agenda in their discipline. Faculty research is supported by the Sophia Research Organization and Sophia Research Institutes. Faculty must fulfill educational, research, and administrative duties in the operation of the department and faculty and participate in admissions duties in the FLA and GPGS. Faculty must also carry out administrative duties required by Sophia University.

Sophia University, located in central Tokyo, was founded in 1913 by the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) and is one of Japan’s leading private universities. The FLA offers a comprehensive program in the humanities, international business and economics, and social studies. In addition to our degree students, we annually welcome exchange students from leading universities overseas. We also staff the Graduate Program in Global Studies, which offers M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Global Studies and Japanese Studies, and an M.A. degree in International Business and Development Studies.
