Lecturer / Senior Lecturer in Operations Management (E&R)

This full-time permanent post is available from 1 September 2024, or soon thereafter. The postholder will be based in the sub-department – Operations and Analytics (Streatham Campus).

The University of Exeter Business School seeks to appoint a permanent Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Operations Management. We are looking for an exceptional academic to join our Operations and Analytics sub-department, whose research and teaching addresses the most pressing challenges in the fields of Operations Management, Supply Chain Management, and Business Analytics.

Please note, we welcome applications from all fields of Operations Management, but preference will be given to researchers with expertise in project management.

The role

The successful candidate will contribute fully to departmental activities, with primary focus on engaging and leading research that informs and enhances our academic programs and deliver high-quality teaching on academic programmes within the Business School. Members of the Operations and Analytics sub-department publish in leading academic journals, such as the Management Science, Production and Operations Management, International Journal of Operations and Production Management, International Journal of Production Economics, Supply Chain Management: An International Journal, European Journal of Operational Research, among others. The department members have a successful track record of winning substantial research funding. In the 2021 Research Excellence Framework assessment, the University of Exeter Business School (UEBS) is ranked the 9th in the UK for our Business and Management research. 92% of our Business and Management research is world leading or internationally excellent.

The Department of Management comprises 6 subject specific sub-departments. One of them is the Operations & Analytics group, which covers Operations Management, Operations research, Business Analytics, Supply Chain Management, Sustainable Business and Project Management. The successful candidate will join a vibrant and growing team of academics who are engaged in a broad range of scholarly activities, research, and impact.

Colleagues in UEBS contribute to teaching across the range of undergraduate, postgraduate and MBA programmes as part of the Faculty of Environment, Science & Economy, and the successful applicant will be expected to make a significant contribution to the teaching activities of the group at all levels. Successful candidate will also help us to deliver quality research and an inclusive and innovative education to our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

The post will include leading research studies, creating impact and engagement and also designing and delivering taught modules, workshops, flipped classroom learning opportunities and applying contemporary practices in Business and Management.  It will also include supporting students through their learning journey, mentoring personal tutees and working to support out flagship With Industrial Experience and With Study Abroad programmes as appropriate.

About you

For a Lecturer post you will have:

  • A PhD or equivalent qualification/experience in the subject or a closely related discipline.
  • Sufficient knowledge in the areas of operations management, supply chain management, business analytics and/or project management to develop teaching and research programmes.
  • An expectation to conduct research at the highest level and publish it in leading academic journals.
  • A strong record in attracting research funding, or demonstrable potential to attract such funding.
  • Teamwork skills to work in collaboration with existing group members.
  • An active and supportive approach to inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary research that will help to foster interactions and links both within the University and externally with other educational bodies, professional institutions, and employers.
  • The attitude and ability to engage in continuous professional development
  • The aptitude to develop familiarity with a variety of strategies to promote and assess learning
  • Enthusiasm for delivering undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
  • An understanding of the importance of equality and diversity within an organisation and a commitment to helping create an inclusive culture.
  • Be expected to work towards Associate or Fellow of the HEA status and to attend formal CPD relating to this.

For a Senior Lecturer post you will:

  • A PhD or equivalent qualification/experience in the subject or a closely related discipline.
  • Expert knowledge in the areas of operations management, supply chain management, business analytics and/or project management to develop teaching and research programmes.
  • A strong record in attracting research funding, or demonstrable potential to attract such funding.
  • Be expected to have a clearly defined research agenda with a track record to publish in top peer-reviewed journals.
  • Teamwork skills to work in collaboration with existing group members.
  • An active and supportive approach to inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary research that will help to foster interactions and links both within the University and externally
  • The attitude and ability to engage in continuous professional development.
  • The aptitude to develop familiarity with a variety of strategies to promote and assess learning.
  • Enthusiasm for delivering undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
  • A strong record of research grant capture.
  • Proven academic leadership skills.
  • Be an externally recognised authority in the broader subject area.
  • An understanding of the importance of equality and diversity within an organisation and a commitment to helping create an inclusive culture.
  • Be expected to work towards Fellow or Senior Fellow of the HEA status and to attend formal CPD relating to this.
