About the Position

We are seeking an innovative and dedicated Lecturer to join the Art & Design Department at De Montfort University Kazakhstan on our joint BA (Hons) Graphic Design and BA (Hons) Graphic Design (Illustration) programmes. The role is designed for creative professionals passionate about guiding the next generation of graphic designers and illustrators. Whether you are new to academia or an experienced industry professional, this position offers the opportunity to contribute to a dynamic educational environment that values creativity, technological integration, and practical experience.

Our programmes provide students with career opportunities within the broad field of visual communication (e.g. branding, advertising, motion design, illustration, publishing, and more). The role involves teaching both core and specialized modules that cover a breadth of topics from visual communication and creative resolution to typography and illustration skills. You will support students in a professional studio environment as they develop new skill sets and build their understanding of the design process.

Candidates will join a team of practicing designers to build connections with the local creative community and industry and engage students in hands-on projects and creative industries competitions. Our DMUK Global programme further enhances our curriculum, offering students an international experience to explore the broader design context and build an international mindset.

Required Qualifications

• A Master’s degree or PhD in a related discipline, or a Bachelor’s degree with relevant professional experience in graphic design or illustration.
• A strong foundation in graphic design OR illustration is essential, with expertise in emerging technologies or packaging as desirable.
• Proficiency in industry-standard software (Adobe Suite) and other specialism-specific software.

Academic Expectations and Responsibilities

• Develop and deliver engaging, interactive lectures and practical workshops, incorporating supervised and self-directed studio work.
• Develop and manage modules in a broad spectrum of areas in graphic design, including but not limited to:
  1. General visual communication studio projects
  2. Fundamentals of visual communication
  3. Applied design research
  4. Typography and layout
  5. An area of additional specialism within one or more of the areas of AR/VR/3D/animation/motion or Branding/Packaging/Surface design
• Assess work across module components to evaluate students' skills and development.
• Create and maintain high-quality teaching materials, assessment records, and course resources on the programme’s virtual learning environment.
• Act as a personal tutor.
• Ensure the curriculum delivery is current, relevant, and meets the needs of all stakeholders, including students, industry, and professional associations.
• Be involved in organizing and supporting student exhibitions and participate in departmental activities such as open days, applicant interviews, and portfolio reviews.
• Explore, develop, and implement global travel opportunities for the students as an integral part of the teaching and learning experience.
• Perform administrative duties related to student recruitment, enrolment, induction, teaching, and assessment.
• Engage in continuous professional development to stay current with emerging trends and technologies in the graphic design industry.
• Undertake additional duties as required, commensurate with the role.
