Over the past 20 years, ESSEC Business School has built a unique teaching and research platform on social innovation, social entrepreneurship and social impact. Today, social and environmental sustainability has become central to the school strategy. The school develops a wide range of courses and learning experiences for students in all full-time programs as well as participants in executive education.

In light of the growing demand for sustainability-related courses, ESSEC is aiming to recruit a new Professor of Management Practice, who will join the Public and Private Policy Department to strengthen the sustainability expertise of ESSEC, by bringing in top-of-the art teaching skills as well as an ability to initiate and lead innovative pedagogical initiatives.

This opportunity ahead requires an ambitious, talented and dedicated professor who is knowledgeable of business sustainability broadly, with specific expertise on ecological transition, in order to teach a wide range of courses pertaining to how businesses and organizations need to engage in profound transformations to ensure that they do not consume natural resources too quickly and compromise the health and wellbeing of future generations, as well as of the planet.


Based on the ESSEC Business School Cergy Campus, the professor will join the Public and Private Policy academic department, and will work closely with the teams already working on sustainability to develop the following activities:

  • Courses: Teach Sustainability to undergraduate (GBBA) and graduate students (Master in Management/Grande Ecole, Specialized Masters, GMBA) as well as Executive Education participants. These programs are being taught in French and English on our campuses in Cergy and Paris La Défense and will also be developed in Singapore and Rabat.
  • Pedagogical innovation: Develop pedagogical case studies, MOOCs and short videos, position papers, books and other relevant content for courses and seminars (See: Organize large-scale pedagogical events (Bootcamps, Hackathons, etc.) to mobilize students on sustainability related projects.
  • Community: Organize community events that include guest speakers, pitch events, meetups, both inside the schools and with partner organizations.
  • Service to the school: Participate in admissions boards, take responsibility for courses, coordinate multi-section courses, etc.

The Professor of Management Practice will focus specifically on teaching and coaching students, and developing new pedagogical content about sustainability across the full spectrum of programs at ESSEC. The number of teaching hours is 300 hours/year and corresponds to a full time contract (CDI). The option to teach 240 hours in the context of a part time (4/5) contract is also available.


Given the above-mentioned mission and job responsibilities, the job incumbent will need to demonstrate:

  1. Significant professional experience (at least 5 years) in sustainability
  2. Significant academic credentials with at least a Master degree, Phd/doctorate can be a plus.
  3. Significant and successful experience in teaching sustainability
  4. Advanced knowledge about the academic and practical discourse on sustainability, and an open, non-dogmatic mind about it.
  5. Proven experience in business development and/or new pedagogical content creation.
  6. Fluency in both French and English, and proven ability to teach in both languages

  4. The recruiting committee will assess the situation, and will invite selected candidates to either formal or virtual campus visits, based on school policy, government policy, and World Health Organization recommendations for international travel at the time.
  5. The position will be available from September 1, 2023. An earlier starting date may be negotiable depending on availability.
